TCO / Total Cost of Ownership

TCO stands for Total Cost of Ownership and describes the total costs incurred over the entire life cycle of a product, system, or solution. This includes not only the initial purchase cost but also follow-up costs such as operation, maintenance, downtime, spare parts, training, energy consumption, and potential retrofitting costs.

In technical procurement and when making investment decisions, the TCO analysis helps to realistically compare different solutions. A product with a higher purchase price can be more cost-effective in the long term if it offers lower maintenance costs, shorter setup times, higher availability, or a long service life.
